November 22, 2002

Dear Colleagues:

With profound sadness, we write to inform you that Fredrick J. "Rick" Montz, professor of gynecology, obstetrics and oncology in the School and director of the Kelly Gynecologic Oncology Service in the Hospital, died of a heart attack last evening, apparently while jogging.

A consummate physician, researcher and teacher, Rick was renowned for his extraordinary ability to communicate with, and comfort his thousands of cancer patients. His contributions to the advancement of gynecologic oncology centered always on his abiding concern for the physical and mental well being of those for whom he cared. He was the recipient of numerous teaching awards, had published more than 150 articles and edited several textbooks.

A champion of the underserved, Rick traveled the world to lend his skills and compassion to victims of international disasters. His enthusiasm and energy for life, and his unwavering devotion to those who faced death stand as models for his students and colleagues.

We know you join us in conveying our deepest sympathy to his wife and four children. We will keep you informed about funeral and memorial service arrangements.

Edward D. Miller, M.D.
Dean/CEO Johns Hopkins Medicine

Ronald R. Peterson,
President, The Johns Hopkins Hospital

Harold E. Fox, M.D.,
Professor and Chair, Gynecology and Obstetrics
