May 2, 2003

Dear Colleagues:

Congratulations! Hopkins remains in first place among awards to medical schools according to the NIH ranking table released on May 1.

The Hopkins SOM awards amounted to $382,006,714 for the 2002 federal fiscal year of October 1, 2001 to September 30, 2002 (an 11.7% increase over 2001). This was $34.3M more than 2nd place University of Pennsylvania. The details are available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/award/rank/medttl02.htm

JHU (including the SOM) was also 1st among all awardees with total awards amounting to $510,005,326. Details at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/award/trends/rnk02all1to100.htm

This ranking is a great tribute to our brilliant scientists, but also to all of you who work in their labs and clinics, as well as behind the scenes, to make their research -- and the cures of tomorrow -- possible.
Sincerely,

Edward D. Miller, M.D.
