National Nurses Week: May 6-12

Dear Colleagues,

As we celebrate Nurses Week, please join me in recognizing the outstanding achievements of Johns Hopkins Nursing. As the nation continues to face a nursing shortage, we have confronted the challenge and are moving forward. Changes in compensation, recruitment and retention are beginning to take hold. Much lower vacancy rates reflect the success of our programs. Turnover is reduced and retention is up.

We know that it takes the best nurses, working in the best practice environment to provide the best outcomes. For more than a century, Hopkins nurses have been recognized for their passion for patients, learning and sharing knowledge. Today, they are taking the lead in many of our patient safety and quality improvement initiatives. The new Center for Innovation in Quality Patient Care will rely heavily on nursing expertise as we look for better and more efficient ways to take care of patients.

Our nurses are committed to practice excellence, quality in patient care and professional leadership and sensitive to cultural and ethnic diversity of those in their care. They serve as healthcare role models—keeping us true to our mission.

Sincerely,

Ronald R. Peterson, President
The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System
