May 15, 2003

Dear Colleagues,

Once again, you made your mark! Initial results of Employee Satisfaction Survey 2003 are in and the news is good. Employees of both The Johns Hopkins Hospital/Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine ranked their overall job satisfaction higher than in 2001. Sixty-nine percent of JHH/JHHSC survey respondents and 74 percent of SOM survey respondents reported overall satisfaction with their job in the 2003 survey, compared to 59 percent and 70 percent, respectively, in 2001. Fifty-six percent of the JHH/JHHSC workforce and 32 percent of SOM employees participated in this year's survey.

The next step in the survey process is to review the initial results in small group settings, which are called follow-up sessions. These confidential, one-hour sessions provide the opportunity for employees to provide more information about how they feel about the workplace and to clarify the survey's findings. JHH/JHHSC is conducting these sessions by appointment with functional units. SOM plans to conduct sessions with departments that had either very high satisfaction scores (to learn more about what they're doing well) or those that had very low scores (to assess potential causes and identify specific opportunities for improvement). If your work group is scheduled for a follow-up session, please make every effort to participate. Information gathered from the follow-up sessions is very important to the overall analysis of the survey results and will be used to develop the final results report.

We appreciate the efforts employees made to participate in this year's employee satisfaction survey. We look forward to sharing the full results report with all employees this summer, and exploring opportunities to make our institution an even better place to work.

Sincerely,

Edward D. Miller, M.D.
