Interim Dean Krieger School of Arts and Sciences

    Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

Last week, when we announced that Dean Daniel Weiss of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences had been elected president of Lafayette College, we promised to get back to you quickly with information on interim leadership for the school.

I am pleased to report now that Adam Falk, dean of faculty in the Krieger School, has agreed to assume the role of interim dean, effective January 1.

In this role, Dr. Falk will be primarily responsible for all facets of the school’s operation until a national search identifies a successor to Dean Weiss. Until he leaves to assume the Lafayette presidency on July 1, Dean Weiss will retain the title of James B. Knapp Dean and will work in partnership with Interim Dean Falk. Dan intends to remain very much involved in the life of the school and do everything he can to ensure a smooth transition to new leadership.

Adam Falk is in a perfect position to maintain the momentum Dean Weiss has established in implementing the Krieger School’s strategic plan in such vital areas as faculty hiring, undergraduate education, student aid, and facilities. Since becoming dean of the faculty in 2002, he has been Dan’s right hand and has been integrally involved in all major decisions.

Dr. Falk, a high-energy physicist, has been a member of the faculty since 1994 and achieved the rank of professor in 2000. A winner of the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award, Adam is a fellow of the American Physical Society and has been a National Science Foundation national young investigator. He graduated in 1987 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his doctorate at Harvard in 1991.

Adam Falk is a distinguished scientist and a proven leader. I am grateful to him for taking on this important new assignment.

As I said last week, we intend to launch quickly a national search for Dean Weiss’ successor. Details will be announced shortly after the first of the year.

    Sincerely,

    William R. Brody
