New Web Site Policy

February 11, 2005

    Dear Colleagues:

We write to request your cooperation in further efforts to present Johns Hopkins Medicine to the world in a coordinated fashion. Our name is one of the best known in the world, and weve been zealous in controlling its use in book titles and on products. Yet at the same time, there has been little control over Web sites using the JHM name. Many of these sites are developed by individual faculty members and hosted on external servers. (Weve even found some hosted in the Cayman Islands!)

Henceforth, we are asking all parts of Johns Hopkins Medicine interested in developing a Website or in significantly modifying their site to work through the Web Center in the Office of Corporate Communications at (webcenter@jhmi.edu). Available to you will be coordinated templates and a content management system that will allow your designated staff to update contents without specialized Web experience. More information about these services is available at http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/WebCenter/services.html.

We also have asked Web Center staff to work with departments to try to insure that features you require are available. They also are aware of "grandfathered" sites. And we take this opportunity to remind you that any sites using the Johns Hopkins Medicine brand should have Health Information Management Group (HIMG) review and approval, (particularly if that site has any outside funding or sponsorship). The link to these policies is at http://www.hopkinsbrand.org/

Again, thank you for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Edward D. Miller, M.D. Ronald R. Peterson
