Best of the Best 2005

July 22, 2005

Dear Colleagues:

It is with tremendous pleasure that I announce the appointment of David B. Hellmann, M.D., M.A.C.P., Mary Betty Stevens Professor of Rheumatology and chairman of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, as the new vice dean for the Hopkins Bayview campus.

A magna cum laude graduate of Yale, David has been a member of the Hopkins Medicine family for three decades, beginning with his years as a medical student here. Except for six years at the University of California in San Francisco, all of his exceptional clinical and educational work has been at Hopkins. He has served as deputy director of the Department of Medicine and associate physician-in-chief of the Hopkins Hospital; clinical director of the Division of Molecular and Clinical Rheumatology; medical director of the Faculty Practice Center; director of the Osler Medical House Staff training program; and the co-founder and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Vasculitis Center. He is associate editor of both the American Journal of Medicine and of Medicine and has received numerous academic and professional awards.

David was the executive vice chairman of the Department of Medicine and its vice chairman for clinical affairs when he agreed to become chairman of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview in 2000, and his arrival on our Eastern Avenue campus has brought even greater energy to its already dynamic development. He has recruited remarkably accomplished division directors and attracted other highly regarded individuals to join the medical center's departments.

He is committed to building upon Hopkins Bayview's strengths and developing programs there that reinforce the bonds between our two campuses. His appointment as vice dean reflects our commitment to the same goal. In addition to becoming vice dean, David will remain as chairman of the Department of Medicine at Hopkins Bayview.

We are extremely fortunate that the reservoir of Hopkins' talent is so deep that when a vital member of the Hopkins Medicine family such as Reuven Pasternak leaves, we have a David Hellmann to succeed him.

Edward D. Miller, M.D.
CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine
Dean of the Medical Faculty
