Best of the Best 2005

January 19, 2006

Dear Faculty Member:

This letter’s purpose is to solicit suggestions for naming of the newly created Colleges within the School of Medicine. As you may know, the Colleges Advisory/Clinical Skills Program began this academic year in an effort to invigorate the student advising system and the Clinical Skills curriculum. Each College presently consists of about one-quarter of each of the four classes of medical students and a staff of six faculty advisors. The program seeks to enhance students’ learning by:

• fostering longitudinal mentoring relationships between students and faculty;
• teaching and modeling professionalism, compassion, and patient-centered care;
• promoting student scholarship and leadership;
• encouraging peer mentorship, collegiality, and community within the student body;
• supporting intensive instruction in the clinical skills of medicine;
• facilitating student access to the larger body of faculty and resources in this leading scientific
community.

PDF synopsis of the Colleges Program is listed below for your interest.

We are now asking students, faculty, and alumni to help us in this wonderful task of finding the right names for the Colleges, as our choices will likely become very important to our students for years to come. Your creativity and wisdom in offering suggestions are most valued. On the basis of committee discussion, we have identified categories of names and some of the values we would like to embody within the Colleges, which may serve as a reference point for your thinking (see attached). If we choose to name the Colleges after people, the committee feels strongly that still-living members of the community be ineligible.

Please use the attached submission form to send your proposal to Tom Finucane, MD (tfinucan@jhmi.edu or fax: 410-550-2513) by Friday, February 3, 2006. If you have questions, feel free to contact Dr. Finucane, David Levine, MD (dlevine@jhmi.edu), Hoover Adger, MD (hadger@jhmi.edu), or the Colleges Advisory Office (410-502-3737). If you need assistance with historical information, Ms. Nancy McCall, MLA, Archives and Research Associate (nmccall@jhmi.edu), and Dr. Randy Packard, Chair, History of Medicine (rpackar2@mail.jhmi.edu), are available to help you.

We thank you so much for your interest in and support of the Colleges, and welcome your involvement in this new student-faculty program in the months and years ahead.

Sincerely,

David Nichols, M.D., MBA
Vice-Dean for Education

Tom Koenig, M.D.
Associate Dean, Student Affairs

Rob Shochet, M.D.
Director, Colleges Advisory Program
