Steve Thompson Appointed New CEO of JHI

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that we announce that effective immediately, Steven J. Thompson will assume the role of chief executive officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHI), the arm of Johns Hopkins Medicine that enters into international agreements and manages our rapidly growing international enterprises.

Steve was first appointed CEO of JHI in 1999 when it was established. Under his astute leadership, the new organization grew into a highly successful and expansive venture. Steve left that post in July 2007 at our request to become senior vice president of JHM in order to oversee the coordination and planning, integration and expansion of our inpatient and outpatient clinical enterprises during a time of unprecedented growth. As we look around at our vibrant and expanding system, which includes two new hospitals and a third anticipated, expansion of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, and a host of other new affiliations and relationships, we see abundant evidence of Steve's great success in orchestrating this major strategic expansion.

At the same time, we have witnessed explosive growth in our overseas endeavors, which have become increasingly important to JHM's future. With the departure of JHI CEO Harris Benny, it became obvious that there is no better person to take the helm than Steve. So, it's back to the future for him. As our past successes with JHI have demonstrated, tremendous opportunities exist for us to take our mission to the rest of the world. In the global village and economy we now live in, it's clear that our overseas ventures will become ever more critical to the financial health of JHM as well as its overall mission "to improve the health of the community and the world."

We will continue to rely on his guidance and judgment on many matters critical to JHM. For this reason, Steve will maintain an office in the Dean's suite.

As you know, JHM has been experiencing record growth in other areas as well, and we embarked on a review of our organization and structure in light of this growth. Over the next several months, we will be making decisions based on this review, and most of Steve's previous responsibilities will be divided among a number of other JHM officials in accordance with the restructuring, and appropriate announcements will be made.

Since joining Hopkins in 1994 as administrator of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Steve has distinguished himself in positions of increasing scope, complexity and responsibility. He has earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues here and those he has worked with outside of JHM. We have relied on Steve's sound judgment and acumen in helping build JHM into a major, regional integrated network and will continue to rely on him in this new role.

Please join us in welcoming Steve to this important position.

Dean of the Medical Faculty
