Barbara Fivush, M.D., Appointed Associate Dean for Women in Science and Medicine

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara Fivush, M.D., as the new associate dean for women in science and medicine, effective July 1. This newly created position in the Office of the Vice Dean for Faculty has evolved from the recommendations of the 2005 Committee on Faculty Development and Gender and the increasing need to provide our women faculty with mentoring, educational and networking opportunities. In this new role, Barbara will continue her important efforts to promote and retain our talented women faculty.

Barbara has been director of the Office of Women in Science and Medicine since 2008. Under her leadership, the office has concentrated on faculty gender issues and has worked to increase the representation of women in leadership roles and on high-level school of medicine committees. Over the last three years, Barbara has developed many important and innovative programs and in particular has collaboratively established the leadership program for women faculty—now in its second year. She has initiated an annual event where the recipient of the Vice Dean's Award for the Advancement of Women is recognized, chaired the Joint Oversight Committee and worked closely with the Vice Dean's Office to study and report on faculty salary equity.

Barbara joined the faculty in 1984 in the Department of Pediatrics after completing her residency and a fellowship in pediatric nephrology at the Children's Center. In 1993, she became director of the Division Chief of Pediatric Nephrology in 1993 and has dramatically increased the number of faculty, expanded clinical and research initiatives, and developed an innovative fellowship training program. She has mentored an extremely talented group of young physicians and researchers who have developed academic careers. Promoted to professor of pediatrics in 2001, she will bring her substantive expertise to her new role as associate dean.
