A Message from President Daniels: Medicine dean/CEO search update.

Dear Faculty and Staff:

I write to provide an update on the search for Dr. Ed Miller's successor as dean of the School of Medicine and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Since my last message to you, Provost Lloyd Minor and Johns Hopkins Medicine Chairman of the Board Frank Burch -- co-chairs of the dean/CEO search committee -- have worked diligently to gather the insights and suggestions of academic and administrative leaders across Johns Hopkins Medicine. To date, they have met with and listened to more than 50 department directors, vice deans and vice presidents across Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Health System. These meetings have been enormously valuable in shaping a portrait of the qualities and characteristics necessary to lead Johns Hopkins Medicine forward, as well as in identifying the challenges and opportunities the next dean/CEO will face. Provost Minor and Mr. Burch will continue to hold these very productive meetings throughout the summer.

I am pleased to report that the dean/CEO search committee recently convened to begin its efforts in earnest, and I could not have asked for a more impressive group to discharge the important responsibility it has been given. I have every confidence that this committee is going to be remarkably effective in identifying the most qualified and well-suited candidates for what I consider to be the most prestigious leadership position in academic medicine today.

I am also pleased to share with you that we have retained Dr. Ilene Nagel of the executive search firm Russell Reynolds Associates to help facilitate our search for the next dean/CEO. Dr. Nagel has more than 30 years experience in academia and leads Russell Reynolds' national education practice, focusing on searches at universities and colleges for presidents and other senior academic administrators. She has a deep appreciation for and understanding of Johns Hopkins, having successfully led multiple leadership searches here. We are fortunate to have her as a partner in this most important search process.

I want to thank those of you who have submitted confidential nominations in response to my previous e-mail message. Nominations are still being received and can be sent to the search committee at the following e-mail address: jhumedicine@russellreynolds.com. Please submit your nominations by Aug. 1.

Sincerely,

Ronald J. Daniels
