New Diversity Initiative for School of Medicine Sent to SOM management list serv 8.8.11

Dear Colleagues,

We have steadily increased efforts involving our Diversity and Inclusion 2020 objectives. To continue this progress, the school of medicine's Office of Diversity and Cultural Competence and Human Resources have joined together with the university's Talent Management Organizational Development (TMOD) Office to establish more comprehensive approaches toward a culture of inclusion.

Effective Sept. 1, newly hired school of medicine staff will be strongly encouraged to attend a Campus Conversations on Diversity and Inclusion (CCDI) session as part of university orientation. These are in-house training programs designed to help individuals become more aware of issues related to cultural diversity and sensitivity and to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in our university environment.

The CCDI is not limited to newly hired employees. Each month, current employees have the opportunity to get together for safe, confidential and engaging dialogue about perceptions of power and identity, the impact of unconscious bias on an individual's decisions and actions, and how to respect each other's differences. This unique diversity workshop is designed to generate insightful conversations as the participants explore their perspectives on diversity and inclusion at Hopkins.

The training is sponsored by TMOD, and the sessions are free and open to all full- and part-time university faculty, staff and management. We encourage individuals or groups to sign up. You may register for a workshop at http://learning.jhu.edu. Managers interested in scheduling an internal session for their work group should contact Megeen Thomas, CCDI administrative coordinator, at 443-997-4570 or Megeen@jhu.edu.

Please contact Gloria Bryan, senior director of human resources for the school of medicine, if you have any comments or questions about the program for newly hired school of medicine staff. She can be reached at 410-955-2586 or by email gbryan@jhmi.edu.
