In Memoriam: John Bergbower, JHM Vice President for Corporate Security, Parking and Transportation

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to report, with great sadness, the death of John Bergbower, our colleague and Vice President for Corporate Security, Parking and Transportation of Johns Hopkins Medicine. John passed away on Sunday after a fall in his home. This is a terrible tragedy for his family, his colleagues in the security department and everyone that knew him.

John was named vice president in January, following the retirement of Harry Koffenberger. Prior to that he served as the senior director of Corporate Security and oversaw security, parking and transportation operations on the East Baltimore campus, as well as the security operations at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Howard County General Hospital. He joined the Johns Hopkins security team in 2003 as director of investigations after a three year stint as the director of enforcement for the commissioner of financial regulation in the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation for the state of Maryland.

A 27-year veteran of the Baltimore City Police Department, John retired as the commanding officer of the Special Investigations Section of the Criminal Investigation Division after serving as the commanding officer of the Southwestern District and the interim head of the department’s Planning and Research Division. He began his police career as a beat officer in the Eastern District in 1974 with the shadow of Hopkins just south of his first post assignment.

In addition, John taught an undergraduate course in Economics and a graduate course in Human Resource Management for the Division of Public Safety Leadership in the Johns Hopkins University School of Education. He also earned a master’s degree in management from JHU in 1998.

The viewing will take place at Ruck Towson Funeral Home Inc., 1050 York Road, Towson, Md. 21204 on Wednesday, April 4, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held on Thursday, April 5, at 9 a.m. at Ruck Towson Funeral Home Inc. with the interment at 10:30 a.m. at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens. Flowers are welcome or donations in John’s name can be made to Catholic Charities of Baltimore, 320 Cathedral Street, Baltimore, Md. 21201.

John was an important part of the Hopkins community and will be missed. Please keep his wife Patti and daughter Emily in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Ronald R. Peterson
President
The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System
EVP, Johns Hopkins Medicine
