Message from Vice Dean David Nichols regarding LCME Accreditation

In September 2012, the School of Medicine will embark on an exciting and extremely important process of self-study for Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) accreditation. We are certainly proud of the long heritage of accreditation and reputation associated with the Johns Hopkins M.D. degree-granting program. Since our last accreditation visit in 2006, the school has seen extraordinary changes that affect our medical students’ educational experience, including implementation of a major four-year curriculum revision, Genes to Society; the Armstrong Medical Education Building; founding and growth of the Simulation Center; and upgraded University Health System. The self-study is an opportunity for us to take stock and measure ourselves against 130 national standards for accreditation.

A successful self-study requires involvement of the entire community at all levels of faculty, students, administration and staff. In the next month, many of you will receive invitations from Dean Rothman to join one of the five self-study committees. Others may be asked to complete surveys or provide data. I thank you in advance for the contribution of your time and effort to this important work.

David G. Nichols, M.D., M.B.A.
