Thank you for your hard work and commitment

Dear Colleagues,

Now that the weather system has passed, we’d like to once again thank all of the faculty, staff and trainees who helped ensure that business continued throughout the storm. Normal operations have resumed today, and that is largely due to your outstanding efforts.

Whether it was our facilities team who plugged leaks; the drivers who picked up staff; operators and administrative employees who tackled the huge influx of calls; or the nurses, housekeepers and nutrition employees who kept our patients comfortable during this challenging time, all of our employees showed the kind of determination and grit that is exemplary of the people of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Our clinical operations and transportation services have returned to normal. This, too, would not be possible without your round-the-clock dedication and commitment.

Although we did escape the brunt of the hurricane, there were disruptions at a few of our facilities. For example, on the East Baltimore campus, the Cancer Research Building II suffered basement flooding and a loss of power, phone and network services. Research animals and assets had to be relocated, and freezers, refrigerators and incubators had to be quickly secured. This required tireless work and extraordinary coordination from team members throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine, and we’d like to offer our special thanks to the many staff members and researchers who waded through the flood and intervened during this critical time.

The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center also reported flooding, but it did not affect normal daily operations. While Suburban Hospital closed its Outpatient Medical Center yesterday, it’s back to normal today.

The important thing is that our people were nimble and determined, and they made the necessary adjustments to keep our patients safe. We sincerely appreciate all of your extra efforts—be it coming in early, staying overnight or working beyond your normal roles—to support your colleagues and to continue providing care to the patients we all serve.

Sincerely,
Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
