December Strategic Plan Update

To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community

Dear Colleagues,

Every year, leaders from all of our organizations gather for the Johns Hopkins Medicine Leadership Meeting. This time, on Oct. 31, more than 450 of us assembled to hear the "Why, What and How of the JHM Strategic Plan."

It was gratifying to see such interest in how we can make our great institution even better. As you've heard us say many times, there is a lot of change going on in health care, and challenges within the industry require that we be even more strategic and forward-thinking than we have been in the past. To achieve the vision articulated in the plan, we have created an implementation schedule and are meeting regularly with the leaders responsible for carrying out each step to review key tactics and discuss progress.

Every month, we want to share with you how we are progressing with our strategic plan and our six strategic priorities.

Here are three top items we have accomplished this month:

  • In January 2014, we will transition to SuccessFactors, a recruitment management system that will help us attract, develop and retain the world's best people. Candidates will be able to search and apply for all jobs in the health system from a central portal instead of visiting each individual website.
  • We've launched the JHM Research Council to create a new research structure that uses resources from across the enterprise to accelerate collaboration, innovation and quality.
  • The work to implement standard clinical protocols to maximize quality and safety continues. Spine protocols have been created and are in the process of implementation.

Johns Hopkins Medicine continues to lead the nation in clinical expertise, research, education and innovation. Our five-year plan is a roadmap that gives us the chance to emerge as an even stronger leader in the evolving environment, and together we will continue on that road.

If you want to better educate yourself on the six strategic priorities, visit the website at hopkinsmedicine.org/strategic_plan. What are you doing to implement the plan? We welcome your feedback; you can email your thoughts or questions to us at strategicplan@jhmi.edu.

Sincerely,
Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
