January Strategic Plan Update: Investing in People

To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community

Dear Colleagues,

As the New Year begins, it brings with it goal-setting and resolution-making activities. At Johns Hopkins Medicine, we are ahead of the game, having launched our five-year Strategic Plan last summer. This is a good time to refocus on our most valuable asset and first strategic priority: people. Our people goals are designed to benefit our entire JHM family of over 41,000 faculty, staff, students and trainees.

These bold goals aim to demonstrate that employees' contributions are valued. And while the end of 2013 only represents six months into our Strategic Plan rollout, we have many accomplishments to celebrate and planned enhancements to anticipate:

  • SuccessFactors: SuccessFactors is an automated performance management system that will improve the quality of our annual review and professional development activities. This will allow for easier measurements of the requirements of each job along and for setting and reviewing annual goals. We will be rolling out SuccessFactors this month for Johns Hopkins Home Care Group, Johns Hopkins HealthCare and Johns Hopkins Community Physicians. It will be implemented at additional organizations over the next two years.
  • Faculty Development WAGS: The school of medicine's Office of Faculty Development has launched new Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs), which are peer-led groups that support all faculty members in establishing good writing habits when it comes to writing papers for publication. Demand has been high for participation in these weekly writing groups, which aim to improve the quality and quantity of writing with goal-setting, time management and regular practice.
  • Chief Diversity Officer: To improve the culture of diversity and inclusion at Johns Hopkins Medicine, we're recruiting a chief diversity officer. This broad-reaching position will have responsibility for improving the culture of diversity at JHM among the staff across all entities. We hope to fill this position during the first half of 2014.
  • 360-degree Reviews: We believe that Johns Hopkins leaders should be evaluated by not only those they work for, but also by the employees they work with, including those whom they oversee. Currently, we are reviewing various tools that will allow us to perform 360-degree evaluations for all leaders within the organization beginning with top management, and we aim to extend this program to all management positions over time.
  • Faculty Satisfaction Survey: The results of the 2013 Faculty Satisfaction Survey, which had a 63 percent response rate, indicated that 73 percent of the respondents are highly satisfied or satisfied with being a faculty member and with the collegial and supportive environment. However, we found that most faculty members are not satisfied with their compensation or the transparency of compensation. To address this finding, we plan to convene a Taskforce on Faculty Compensation this month.
  • Employee Engagement: In September, we received the results from the 2013 JHM Employee Engagement Survey administered by Gallup. We have concerns that our scores have remained flat. For this reason, we have asked that all managers complete impact plans with their teams, and we have also asked Gallup to conduct focus groups with employees at some of our entities to help us better identify barriers. We expect the results from these focus groups later this month. Once we have reviewed the results, we'll determine next steps.

The people of JHM are what make the institution solid, strong and capable. We will continue to encounter unprecedented challenges in the health care landscape. If each of us aligns our personal work goals to the strategic priorities outlined in the plan, we will continue to position ourselves for success while navigating uncharted terrain together.

Happy New Year!
