JHM Strategic Plan Update: Producing Tomorrow's Leaders

To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community

Dear Colleagues,

Having just witnessed the tremendous sense of accomplishment and positive energy of our recently graduated students, many of whom are preparing for their residencies and fellowships, I'd like to take this opportunity to update you on our education strategic priority. The goal of this priority is to "ensure that the culture, curriculum and content of medical and biomedical education support our mission to lead the world in the education and training of physicians and biomedical scientists."

We have an honorable and significant responsibility to produce tomorrow's leaders. Our work this year, outlined in the Strategic Plan, creates new opportunities for collaboration and prepares our students for the realities of health care and medicine. Here are some of our recent accomplishments toward that goal:

  • Developed a seminar series called "Partnering Toward Discovery" that brings together graduate students and medical students, as well as their faculty mentors. Discussion topics include biomedical research advances, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of an important topic in medicine and biomedical science. Each seminar is immediately followed by a social hour to stimulate collaboration and conversation between groups that gain much from working together and communicating but who might otherwise have scarce opportunities to interact.
  • Implemented education and practice interventions in several residency and fellowship training programs that teach the importance of cost-conscious care and stewardship of resources, e.g., the "Choosing Wisely" campaign to reduce or eliminate potentially wasteful tests or procedures.
  • Developed an inventory of all current community programs that involve medical students, residents or fellows. This includes numerous programs that provide health care and health education to the surrounding community, as well as summer research internship programs for young people (usually high school students) from disadvantaged and minority backgrounds to inspire them to pursue careers in biomedical science or medicine (so-called "pipeline programs").

Together, our education efforts ensure that Johns Hopkins-trained students and residents will have a global impact.

We are always pleased to hear from you. Share your thoughts and ideas by emailing them to strategicplan@jhmi.edu

Sincerely,

Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
