March 12, 2015: Brian Granolati to Step Down as Senior Vice President of Community Division

Dear Colleagues,

It is with a mix of great pride and some sadness that we announce that Brian Gragnolati, senior vice president of the Johns Hopkins Health System Community Division, is stepping down from his position effective May 1 to take on a new role as the president and chief executive officer of Morristown, New Jersey-based Atlantic Health System.

When Brian joined Johns Hopkins Medicine six years ago as the president and CEO of Suburban Hospital, we immediately saw in him a collaborative, strategic leader with an exceptional ability to thrive in complex environments. Since that time, he has shown us exactly what it means to support our academic mission by broadening the scope of our health system. His talent for integrating large-scale operations while developing constructive business relationships across diverse groups has served us all tremendously well.

Brian's success in integrating Suburban Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital into our health system has transformed health care delivery in the national capital region. Today, the patients we serve in that area not only receive the excellence in medicine for which both hospitals were already known, they also benefit from Johns Hopkins innovations in research.

Four years ago, we promoted Brian to head our Community Division, and we have admired his integrity, compassion and wisdom in overseeing the clinical integration of our community hospitals. In this role, he has helped us to fulfill our promise to deliver better and safer care to our communities, and he has done so tirelessly.

Having worked in hospitals and health systems for his entire professional life, Brian truly believes that we can make a difference in people's lives. We have seen this not just in the way he led large segments of our enterprise, but in the way that he invests in and cares for the people with whom he works. During his tenure, he has mentored several of our hospital presidents, and he has shown equal vigor in developing promising leaders of our organization.

Brian has continuously moved our goal of becoming a model for an academically based, integrated health care delivery and finance system forward. He was instrumental in the creation of our accountable care organization, Johns Hopkins Medicine Alliance for Patients, which is made up of our physicians and hospitals, and three community-based provider groups. He has helped broaden our geographic footprint via an agreement with the Highmark Allegheny Health Network to collaborate on cancer care, research and education, and he initiated our relationship with Kaiser Permanente to further expand our reach, share best practices and create better health care models for consumers and their communities.

For all of these reasons and more, it is with some melancholy that we bid Brian farewell. We are, however, very grateful to him for the time he has spent with us, for his leadership, and for his dedicated service to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Please join us in wishing Brian much success as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.

Sincerely,

Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
