Charles Wiener Named Medical Director and Vice President of Academic Affairs for Johns Hopkins Medicine International

To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community

Dear Colleagues,

We are very pleased to announce that Charles Wiener, a 24-year Johns Hopkins Medicine veteran and leader, has accepted the position of medical director and vice president of academic affairs for Johns Hopkins Medicine International, effective today, Nov. 2.

Charlie, along with John Ulatowski, Johns Hopkins Medicine International's vice president and executive medical director, will provide leadership of multiple global projects, including strategic planning, oversight of educational infrastructure planning and medical training. He will also be responsible for connecting Johns Hopkins faculty members with international opportunities, providing workforce development and training programs.

Charlie will retain his current appointments as professor of medicine and physiology at the school of medicine and as director of undergraduate studies for the medicine, science and the humanities major at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. He will focus on more closely integrating Johns Hopkins Medicine International and school of medicine programs, and on coordinating physician involvement in our growing international collaborations. As a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine International's executive leadership team, he will be involved in our strategic planning and project development and our faculty and clinical engagement.

Throughout Charlie's accomplished career at Johns Hopkins, he has been recognized for his medical and academic leadership, extensive institutional and clinical knowledge, and ability to build productive business relationships across diverse groups.

Charlie graduated from Duke University and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He completed specialty training and his chief residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle from 1982 to 1986. The following year, Charlie was an American Heart Association research fellow in the Hammersmith Hospital respiratory physiology unit in London. From 1987 to 1991, he was a fellow in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins.

He has won numerous awards at Johns Hopkins for medical student teaching and house staff mentorship, including the Johns Hopkins Professors' Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Osler House Staff Teaching Award and the George J. Stuart Award for clinical teaching. He is the author of numerous scientific publications, co-authored Harrison's Internal Medicine Self-Assessment (editions 16, 17 and 18) and is an associate editor of the American Journal of Medicine. He serves as an educational consultant for Duke Corporate Education and is on the international advisory board of the new Qatar University College of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine.

While Charlie's daily presence will be missed at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, we are excited that he has the ability to expand his international impact and facilitate greater integration with global opportunities.

Please join us in applauding Charlie's contributions and welcoming him to his new role.

Sincerely,

Pamela D. Paulk, M.S.W., M.B.A.
