Jessica Bienstock Appointed Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Jessica Bienstock, professor of gynecology and obstetrics, will become associate dean for graduate medical education, effective Jan. 1, 2016. As previously announced, the present associate dean, Julia McMillan, is retiring from this position as of this date.

Dr. Bienstock received her B.A. in biology from Barnard College-Columbia University and her M.D. from State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine. She received her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City and also served as an administrative chief resident there. Joining the Johns Hopkins faculty as an instructor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus in 1993, Dr. Bienstock received her M.P.H. from the School of Public Health in 1995. She completed her fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1997 and achieved the rank of professor in 2011.

Dr. Bienstock directed the medical student clerkship in gynecology and obstetrics until 2002. That same year, she became director of the Division of Education in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and, in 2013, she became vice chair for education in the department.

A well-known and outstanding teacher, Dr. Bienstock has received the Resident Education Award in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics an astounding eight times; the National Medical Student Education Award from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics in 2002; and the National Faculty Teaching Award from the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology, in 2005.

Dr. Bienstock became the director of our residency program in gynecology and obstetrics in 2000, and has served in this position for the past 15 years. She has also served as vice chair of our Graduate Medical Education Committee since 2004. In addition to her leadership roles in graduate medical education at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Bienstock is a national leader in graduate medical education. She has served on a number of national medical education committees and has had several leadership roles on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Review Committee (RRC) in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She served as vice chair of the RRC from 2012 to 2015 and became RRC chair this year. Dr. Bienstock also served as the chair of the ACGME's Obstetrics and Gynecology Milestones Alpha Test Committee in 2012 and became chair of the ACGME Obstetrics and Gynecology Milestones Development Committee in 2013. Earlier this year, under Dr. Bienstock's leadership, this group produced the document that described the ACGME Milestones for Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Please join me in congratulating Jessica and welcoming her as associate dean.

Sincerely,

Roy C. Ziegelstein, M.D., M.A.C.P.
Sarah Miller Coulson and Frank L. Coulson, Jr., Professor of Medicine
Mary Wallace Stanton Professor of Education
Vice Dean for Education, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
