Charles Reuland Named EVP/COO for The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

Dear Colleagues,

For the past seven years, Dr. Charles Reuland has shown exceptional leadership overseeing Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center's operations as its executive vice president and chief operating officer. We are pleased that he has graciously accepted our appointment to take on additional responsibilities to also serve as the executive vice president and chief operating officer for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. In this new, expanded role, Dr. Reuland will provide operational leadership on both campuses and spearhead the integration needed to create a virtual "one-hospital, two-campus" model wherever appropriate.

In the 26 years Dr. Reuland has spent at Johns Hopkins, he has held positions that demonstrated his command of clinical and day-to-day operational problem-solving, organizational expertise and passion for employee engagement. After arriving in 1990 as an administrative resident at Francis Scott Key Medical Center (Johns Hopkins Bayview’s predecessor), he was tapped to manage The Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Department of Social Work and Patient Relations. He later became assistant administrator for the Department of Surgical Sciences and then director of managed care contracting. Three years later, he was appointed the functional unit administrator for the Department of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and then was named vice president of clinical operations for Johns Hopkins Bayview.

In his most recent role with Johns Hopkins Bayview, Dr. Reuland has been instrumental as a champion for establishing and growing strong, academically based clinical programs and implementing industry best practices, such as leadership rounding, productivity management and Lean Sigma management techniques.

Dr. Reuland holds master's and doctoral degrees from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has been a member of several statewide committees related to quality-based reimbursement and payment reform. Dr. Reuland is a board member of the American Heart Association Greater Maryland Chapter and served as its chairman for several years. He also chaired the United Way campaign for Johns Hopkins Medicine for two years, has authored papers and textbook chapters, and has reviewed publications for the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Reuland on his new role.

Sincerely,

Redonda G. Miller, M.D., M.B.A.
President, The Johns Hopkins Hospital

Richard G. Bennett, M.D.
President, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
