Hiring Baltimore Residents to Support our HopkinsLocal Commitment

To Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System Corporation administrators, directors, managers and supervisors

Dear Colleagues:

The launch of HopkinsLocal this past fall signaled a significant commitment by The Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Health System to leverage our combined resources to promote economic growth and lead the way to an even more vibrant and prosperous Baltimore. Through HopkinsLocal, we set tangible goals to provide much-needed employment opportunities for area residents; increase our spending for goods and services from local vendors; and boost participation of local, minority-owned and women-owned businesses in our construction opportunities.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Health System have pledged to strengthen recruitment efforts for qualified and competitive local candidates for all position levels, and to ensure that by 2018, 40 percent of new hires in targeted entry-level positions are from communities in distressed Baltimore neighborhoods. These positions include:

  • Certified medical assistant
  • Dietary cashier
  • Environmental care associate I
  • Environmental care tech I
  • Food service worker
  • Lab technician I
  • Linen aide
  • Linen delivery worker
  • Nourishment aide
  • Patient service coordinator I and II
  • Supply coordinator
  • Transport associate

As a supervisor or manager responsible for hiring staff, it is important that you are familiar with the hiring component of HopkinsLocal and how you can help the health system achieve its goals.

First and foremost, we want to continue to hire the best person for the job. When you have an open position in one of the job families mentioned above, the process for posting, recruiting and selection is the same as it is for any other open position. You will still complete and send a requisition to your human resources recruiter to post positions. Human Resources will review all applicants and forward candidates that meet the required qualifications for the position to you for review. If you have a candidate who meets the qualifications for one of the targeted open positions and also lives in Baltimore, we just ask that you strongly consider the candidate. The final decision about which candidate to hire, however, is yours.

Hiring Baltimore residents is one way we can support our city and help create thriving communities. Thank you in advance for your support of HopkinsLocal. If you have questions, please contact Michele Sedney, senior director of central recruitment services, at 443-997-8166 or msedney1@jhmi.edu.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Windsor
Senior Vice President of Human Resources
Johns Hopkins Medicine
