U.S. News Ranks The Johns Hopkins Hospital #1 in Maryland, #4 in the Nation

To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community

Dear Colleagues:

Every year around this time, we share with you U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals list. This year, The Johns Hopkins Hospital once again ranked #1 in Maryland, and it ranked #4 nationally out of nearly 5,000 hospitals. Ten of our specialties are now among the top five, an improvement from last year. We want to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to each one of you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to our patients and mission.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital was also rated high performing in many common hospital procedures that are now included as part of the Best Hospitals methodology. This is all due to the extraordinary work of our nurses, faculty members and staff members.

We offer our sincere congratulations to our esteemed colleagues at Mayo Clinic for ranking #1 this year. We are honored to be among all hospitals that made the list and, like us, continue to improve care for the people in our local communities and around the world.

Please join us in congratulating the following departments for their well-deserved recognition:

#1  Rheumatology
#2  Neurology & Neurosurgery  (an increase of one position from 2015)
#3  Ear, Nose & Throat
#3  Gastroenterology & GI Surgery  (an increase of two positions from 2015)
#3  Ophthalmology
#4  Diabetes & Endocrinology  (an increase of one position from 2015)
#4  Geriatrics (an increase of one position from 2015)
#4  Psychiatry
#4  Urology
#5  Nephrology  (an increase of four positions from 2015)
#7  Gynecology (an increase of five positions from 2015)
#9  Cancer
#9  Cardiology & Heart Surgery  (an increase of seven positions from 2015)
#9  Orthopedics  (an increase of 11 positions from 2015)
#13  Pulmonology

We also want to congratulate our member hospitals and their staff members for their regional rankings. The Johns Hopkins Hospital ranked #1 in all specialties in Maryland and in Baltimore. Suburban Hospital ranked #11 in Maryland and #6 in the Washington, D.C., area. Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center ranked #13 in Maryland and #11 in Baltimore

While we are proud to be positioned again among the best in the nation by U.S. News, we would be remiss if we did not mention the important effects of the ever-changing methodology used for the annual rankings. U.S. News revises its methods every year, adding new measures while adjusting how much each contributes to the overall score. This year, U.S. News made many significant changes, transforming the way the Best Hospitals Honor Roll is computed. Two of these changes had a significant impact on The Johns Hopkins Hospital. One was the way points are calculated and allocated for each specialty. The other was the inclusion of hip and knee replacements, which are mostly performed at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

As some of you know, we are still working with U.S. News to support the use of data that are relevant to Maryland hospitals and to continue to improve the rigor with which data are evaluated.

What is most important is that our patients and the care they receive remain our top priorities. We look forward to our collective focus on continued improvements. You can learn more about the methodology on the Johns Hopkins Medicine intranet, in the special edition of Dome and on the U.S. News website.

It is thanks to you that Johns Hopkins' legacy of clinical excellence and patient- and family-centered care continues to flourish. The Johns Hopkins Hospital's record as a U.S. News & World Report Best Hospital over the past 27 years is unparalleled. It is our privilege to work with you—our exceptional nurses, physicians and staff members. You are some of the most gifted and compassionate caregivers imaginable. Thank you again for all that you do to improve the health of our patients, our communities and the world.

Sincerely,

Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
