Christopher Herzog to Step Down as Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians

To Johns Hopkins Health System employees

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great pride—and also great sadness—that we share with you Chris Herzog's decision to accept an exciting and well-earned opportunity to become the chief financial officer of Atlantic Medical Group. Atlantic Medical Group is the physician practice company associated with Atlantic Health System and is headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey.

Chris joined Johns Hopkins Community Physicians as senior director of finance in 2009 after a 10-year career as a health care management consultant. During his eight-year tenure at Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, Chris has led not only the finance team, but many of the nonclinical functions, including medical records, centralized scheduling, the former Johns Hopkins Community Physicians billing office, credentialing, information systems, and—on an interim basis—the surgical, cardiology, medical subspecialty, Gyn/Ob and hospital medicine operational sections. In addition to his Johns Hopkins Community Physicians-specific roles, Chris was also active representing the organization as a member of the Johns Hopkins Medicine executive finance community and the Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians. In recognition of these significant and diverse contributions, Chris was promoted to vice president in 2013 and promoted again to chief financial officer in summer 2016.

Throughout his time with us, Chris' thoughtful leadership has transcended traditional finance and helped Johns Hopkins Community Physicians thrive in supporting clinical and operational innovation. Some key accomplishments during his tenure include the establishment of comprehensive finance, budgeting and operational reporting functions; implementation of internal financial policies and controls; transition of billing to the Clinical Practice Association and the associated improvement to the Johns Hopkins Community Physicians revenue cycle; and comprehensive benchmarking, demonstrating to the Johns Hopkins Community Physicians board of directors that it is a best-in-class organization. He also had key roles in the integration of the Premier Physician Group (formerly Suburban Hospital-employed doctors) into Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, the support and development of the hospital medicine programs, the acquisition and development of the cardiology section, and the selection of the Remington facility. Chris' efforts to relocate Johns Hopkins Community Physicians' administration to its new home at Mt. Washington and establish a Johns Hopkins Medicine ambulatory supply chain function will be carried forward in his absence. He leaves Johns Hopkins Community Physicians having strived to establish a culture that balances outstanding quality and patient-centered care, sound economic discipline, informed decision-making, and a commitment to team development and engagement.

More details are forthcoming regarding the transition of Chris' responsibilities on an interim basis. Chris' last day will be Feb. 24. We will soon begin the search to fill his roles and will share that information when available.

We sincerely appreciate Chris' outstanding leadership and many significant contributions during his eight years at Johns Hopkins Community Physicians. Please join us in thanking him for his service to Johns Hopkins Community Physicians and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

All my best,
Steve
