Claro M. Pio Roda Named Vice President of Finance for Howard County General Hospital

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Claro M. Pio Roda has been named vice president of finance for Howard County General Hospital. Claro will join the hospital in January.

An experienced leader, Claro came to Johns Hopkins Medicine 23 years ago and has held a number of leadership roles during his tenure. He joins the team at Howard County General Hospital after having served since 2015 as senior director of finance for Johns Hopkins Medicine. In that position, he supervised a team of nine clinical department directors and led the Johns Hopkins Hospital Mission Imperatives project, a $50 million performance improvement initiative to reduce costs while transitioning to value-based care. He also implemented the first consolidated monthly school of medicine departmental financial review process, increasing transparency across departments and the academic hospitals.

Claro also served as the interim administrator of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. He was the director of finance for the department from 2005 to 2014, and was simultaneously the director of the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science. He played a key role in the formation of Johns Hopkins Medical Imaging, and in merger negotiations that created the statewide radiology network known as American Radiology Services.

A strong team player skilled in lean management and process improvement, Claro helped lead the creation of Johns Hopkins Medicine International and Johns Hopkins Singapore, and develop Johns Hopkins Medicine's international growth strategy as its first finance leader. He was also instrumental in finalizing the transaction to bring Howard County Anesthesia Associates to Johns Hopkins.

Claro received a master of health science in health finance and management and a doctor of public health in health leadership and management from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he is an associate faculty member and teaches financial management.

I would like to thank Jim Young for his 14 years of service in this role. Jim announced earlier this year that he was stepping down as vice president. He will remain at Howard County General Hospital in a new planning and construction role.

Please join me in congratulating Claro on his new role, and in welcoming him to Howard County General Hospital.

Sincerely,

Steven C. Snelgrove
President
Howard County General Hospital
