Security Enhancements for the East Baltimore Campus

To Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins University employees on the East Baltimore campus

Dear Colleagues,

At Johns Hopkins we recognize how difficult it is to witness, be a victim of, or even hear about violent crime, such as the shooting that took place around lunchtime on Wednesday near the 900 block of North Broadway. These incidents can take a physical and emotional toll on the staff, patients and visitors who may be directly or indirectly impacted.

The Baltimore City Police Department continues to investigate Wednesday's shooting, and we want to share with you the actions we have taken in response to the incident.

Following notification about the shooting, Corporate Security immediately sent an email to alert our colleagues on the East Baltimore campus about this incident and the resulting road closures.

Corporate Security leadership and officers with responsibility for the campus and the community met with staff members at 901 and 911 N. Broadway near the location of the shooting. We listened to the employees' concerns and suggestions, and shared the known facts of what happened and our plans to enhance security in the area. Some of these enhancements include:

  • Increasing patrols along the Broadway corridor
  • Working with our partners at Kennedy Krieger Institute to provide a permanent security presence at the Broadway and Ashland Avenue intersection, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Adding a JHMI shuttle stop at the corner of Ashland and Broadway

As a large institution in an urban community, we are not immune from incidents of crime that take place in our neighboring communities. Please know our officers are highly trained and committed to keeping our colleagues, patients and visitors safe, and to partnering with the Baltimore Police Department, when necessary.

We ask that you continue to be alert and keenly aware of your surroundings. If something doesn't look or feel right, move to a safe location and seek the assistance of one of our officers.

The Corporate Security team offers walking escort services 24/7 to all of our parking facilities and buildings on the East Baltimore campus. Please call 410-955-5585 or ask any of our officers to request an escort. We also have a vehicle escort that will provide rides to and from the East Baltimore campus within certain boundaries during certain hours. Contact our Transportation Office at 410-502-6880 or visit hopkinsmedicine.org/security_parking_transportation/transportation for more details.

Also, remember that the Faculty & Staff Assistance Program (FASAP) has resources to help with stress and other difficulties. Visit hopkinsworklife.org/employee_assistance for support and information.

Sincerely,

Keith Hill
