Upholding Our Core Values

To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community

Dear Colleagues,

In recent weeks and months, we have seen many moments of division within our country, some quite alarming and close to home. On this we must be clear: Ours is an institution that welcomes people from all countries and backgrounds.

We were disappointed recently to learn that one of our international patients, who was being escorted through the hospital by a staff member, was approached by another visitor, who publicly berated him for speaking his native language and told him to go back to his own country. This appalling interaction stands in stark opposition to our commitment that JHM be an institution that delivers compassionate care for our patients in a healing and safe environment.

Our core values of diversity, inclusion, collegiality and respect are the bedrock on which we forge our relationships with patients, their families, our students and each other. Today we offer a reminder to continue to embody these principles.

In a recent letter to our community, Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels addressed how current barriers to entry or return to the U.S. are impacting this country and this institution. He firmly reiterated his support of all members of the Johns Hopkins community, regardless of beliefs or background, and resolved to uphold our long-cherished values and ideals. We stand firmly united in this resolve.

Questions remain about the implementation of the executive order on immigration, and we will closely follow this evolving situation to gauge the impact it may have on our patients, faculty, students, and staff members. We will share new information with you as it becomes available.

Should you need information or support concerning the order, please contact 443-997-5163 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or email careers@jhmi.edu with Immigration in the subject line of the email.

Regardless of our affiliations and beliefs, we cannot let our differences divide us. Our dedication to our mission must continue to guide us as we work hand-in-hand for the good of our patients, each other and humanity.

Sincerely,

Paul B. Rothman
Dean of the Medical Faculty
