Corinne Sandone Named Director of the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine

To the school of medicine faculty, staff and students

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce that Corinne Sandone has been named to be the director of the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine effective July 1, 2018. Ms. Sandone, an internationally recognized medical illustrator and educator, has demonstrated leadership and excellence in program development in her 30 years at Johns Hopkins. She has served as interim director of the department since February of last year.

Ms. Sandone has an unwavering commitment to the graduate program in medical and biological illustration, which was established at Johns Hopkins more than a century ago by Max Brödel and is one of only four accredited graduate programs in this unique field. During her tenure as director of the graduate program, she has developed significant innovations to the curriculum and worked with the faculty and administration to make the student body more diverse.

Ms. Sandone earned her bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and a Master of Arts in Medical and Biological Illustration from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Following graduate training, she began her career by illustrating a series of full color surgical atlases, and has produced a prodigious body of surgical illustration over the past three decades. Her work has won numerous awards and has been represented in over 150 articles, manuscripts, books and electronic media. She has also mentored more than 25 students and junior faculty members. Ms. Sandone has distinguished herself as a leader in the Association of Medical Illustrators, serving on the board and as president, and being inducted as a fellow.

Founded in 1911, the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine established the first formal medical illustration training in the country and has offered a premiere program throughout its history. I greatly appreciate Cory’s work as the department’s interim director, and I look forward to her continued leadership as we extend the department’s long track record of excellence and leverage its expertise across Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Cory is a creative and enthusiastic advocate for the department and the school of medicine. Please join me in congratulating Cory Sandone as the new director of the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine.

Sincerely,

Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
Dean of the Medical Faculty
CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine
