Ronald Werthman Announces His Retirement

To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community

Dear Colleagues,

We write to inform you that after 25 years of outstanding service, Ron Werthman, senior vice president and chief financial officer for Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), has decided to retire at the end of the calendar year.

A focused and action-oriented problem solver, Ron joined Johns Hopkins in 1993 and has played a critical role in helping us meet the financial and strategic goals that enable JHM to carry out its mission.

Prior to his current role, Ron was chief financial officer for the school of medicine and senior vice president of finance and treasurer/CFO for the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) and The Johns Hopkins Hospital. While serving in these positions, he consolidated our affiliate finance divisions and internal control structures, and worked closely with the management team to develop and implement a budget process that incorporates both JHHS and the school of medicine.

Ron has ably overseen finance, business development, operational improvement and performance measurement. During his tenure, JHM has achieved the highest operating margins in its history and strengthened its balance sheet.

A co-leader for the performance pillar of JHM's FY 2014–FY 2018 strategic plan, Ron and his colleagues enabled us to meet or exceed operating targets each year of the strategic plan, all while continuing and even improving our high standards in patient care. Under his leadership, JHHS has maintained its strong bond ratings while undertaking major capital projects and planning for renovations and routine capital needs, including major redevelopment of the East Baltimore campus, creation of the National Proton Therapy Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital, campus redevelopment at Suburban Hospital, and a new research and education building at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital.

Ron also orchestrated the acquisition of All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, and executed JHM's agreement with Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health/Allegheny Health Network in 2014, growing our presence in the Pennsylvania region.

Ron has been a valued colleague and major contributor to our success. Please join us in thanking him for his leadership and service to JHM and wishing him well in his retirement.

Sincerely,

Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
Dean of the Medical Faculty
CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine

Kevin W. Sowers, M.S.N., R.N., F.A.A.N.
President, Johns Hopkins Health System
EVP, Johns Hopkins Medicine
