Title Building Connections: Renovations to the Welch Library
Sponsor JHM
Details Beginning in September, the second floor of the Welch Medical Library on the East Baltimore campus will get a facelift to improve faculty, staff and students’ experience in the physical space. While the 84-year-old building undergoes a $1.7 million renovation that will improve lighting, seating and electrical access to support technology, primarily the second floor will be closed to users. Before the construction begins, the service desk will move to the lower level and you will notice that the tapestries will be removed as well as some of the other artwork. Throughout the construction much of the lower level and the first floor will remain open, but given that many of the windows will need to be fixed, what is open will vary on these two floors on any given day. Watch for signs that will inform you about entrances, use of rooms and where to find services.

To access the building, the main entrance on Monument Street will remain open and accessible during this project, and will still remain the primary entry point for patrons. Visitors can also enter on Wolfe Street next to the Woods Basic Science & Pre-Clinical Teaching Building. This will take visitors to the back entrance of the library, which is on the lower level. There is another entrance from Washington Street that will bring patrons onto the first floor of the library where they can access the elevator.

The main stairwell in the library will remain open, but partitioned, as it is a fire egress requirement. The main staircase will provide access to the second floor elevator lobby and access to the third floor staircase for the Mezzanine Classroom and the Institute for the History of Medicine. The second floor construction will be walled off from the stairwell, so that the work site is not visible or accessible. The one exception to this will be during the repair of the skylight above that stairwell. Again, please watch for signs that will inform you about entrances, use of rooms and where to find services.

The Medical Archives is also working with library staff to make sure the painting of The Four Doctors will be protected in the West Room, and that the historic integrity of lighting and window treatments are preserved.

Construction will continue through spring/summer 2014. Once completed, there will be more space for small groups, quiet reading areas and personal reflection.
