Details You may have heard about Henrietta Lacks. While she was a patient at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951, extra samples of Mrs. Lacks’ cells were collected during a biopsy for cervical cancer. This was a common practice at hospitals at that time, regardless of the patient’s race or socio-economic status. The collection of Mrs. Lacks’ cells, began what was the first, and, for many years, the only human cell line able to reproduce indefinitely. Although many other cell lines are in use today, Mrs. Lacks’ cells, known as HeLa cells, continue to support advances in many fields of medical research.

Johns Hopkins Medicine applauds efforts to raise awareness of the life and story of Henrietta Lacks. We were proud to support the development of the film by providing full access to our archives and granting permission to film several scenes for the movie on the East Baltimore campus.

We are excited to be able to share the HBO movie, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, with our faculty, staff and students on Friday, April 21—before the movie begins airing on HBO.

To enable as many members of the Johns Hopkins community to view the movie at a time that does not interfere with work or school schedules, four screenings will be held on April 21 in Turner Auditorium on the East Baltimore campus: at 8 a.m., 12 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. A question and answer session will follow each screening.
